In 2023, the Oman Humanitarian Desalination Challenge saw 55 teams from 27 different countries applying, spanning a range of backgrounds including water research centers, private companies and startups, alongside individual innovators and problem solvers.

I am a physics and chemistry high-school teacher. This is my third participation in OHDC. I have long thought that producing fresh water only with the sun, gravity and without too much sophistication is an emergency in many respects. I identified the different aspects of solar distillation to optimize the different processes with publication of articles recommended by peers. I have been working for 4 years on a device that now meets many of the challenge criteria.

UNESCO Chair on Water Reuse

We are a team from the UNESCO Chair on Water Reuse, School of Chemical Engineering, University of Tehran. The focus of this Chair is on unconventional water resources (seawater, brackish and wastewater) with more than ten years of experiences on membrane, thermal and hybrid methods for desalination and water purification.

The Convivial Water team is composed of two mechanical engineers: Sahil Shah, who recently completed a PhD on cost reduction for decentralized desalination, and Will Sawyer, a PhD candidate in process intensification and manufacturing of nanomaterials. The goals of this challenge require a radical rethinking of typical large-scale desalination systems and an understanding of how to utilize existing energy sources in a crisis setting.

PLANET, an Italy-based company, specializes in pioneering the development of bio-inspired products, with a particular focus on solar desalination (Mangrove Technologies), filtration processes, and soil regeneration. Inspired by the extraordinary ability of Mangrove trees to desalinate water and support organic life in arid and saline soil, our team is dedicated to creating a new generation of advanced desalination devices.

Solarinno was founded by Dr. Pak in 2020, mainly for developing ultra low cost micro solar desalinator, which may meet the goal of Oman Humanitarian Desalination Challenge (OHDC). He applied the OHDC in 2019 and 2020, under team named “Sosalinno” which means “Solar deSalination Innovators”. This year, new company name “Solarinno” was used for application.

The Aquabax team specialises in water and waste water treatment sotions. We are composed of engineers, chemist, finance expert and lawyer. Our device meets all the requirements. It is based on simple but advanced distillation process. It is driven by solid wax burner and heat energy is recovered and reused.

Dr. Hamid Samouei has a chemistry background, and his specialty in brine mining.
In light of our extensive experience working with brine and developing innovative methods for mineral extraction from brine, we have recognized a unique opportunity to utilize the byproduct of this process: pure water.
